Invisible vulnerabilities can pose great security risks. |

Excellence in security services is often imperceptible because its very nature results in the reduction of incidents.
A false sense of security, on the other hand, is transparent only until critical service delivery fails.
Just as it is not enough to monitor a facility’s physical entrances and ignore activity on the inside, it is not enough to establish the mere presence of uniformed security personnel.
Because security officers are placed at strategic locations where physical vulnerability has been identified, it is imperative that these personnel minimize vulnerability rather than contribute to it.
Inadequately screened, ill-prepared, unmotivated, or transient personnel only contribute to a false sense of securityactually increasing risk through complacency.
The risks can extend beyond mere unreliability. Unfortunately, some individuals desire to become security officers for dishonorable reasons. Over the past several years, there have been numerous media reports of criminal activities by "guards" placed in positions of trust by others without carefully checking their backgrounds. Incidents range from bribe acceptance to theft, as well as to violence initiated by "guards" themselves. Tight labor markets make careful screening even more urgent.
In an unregulated industry such as ours, the illusion of security is often associated with a lower cost. Unfortunately, companies all too often pay the price laterin increased incidents that result in property loss or damage, business interruption, physical injuries, higher insurance premiums, intellectual property theft, loss of shareholder confidence, or expensive liability verdicts or settlements. |
